AISER and LAVI meeting in Los Angeles

{mosimage}On 4 September 2007, the Interim Director of LA Vocational Institute Mrs. Vana Bahshan , held very fruitful talks  in Los Angeles, California LA Vocational Institute’s Headquarters with the Medical Director of AISER Dr. Ramaz Mitaishvili.

Their discussions centered around the cooperation that exists between LA Vocational Institute and the Abkhazia Institute for Social and Economic Research, as well as possible areas where the two Organizations could establish cooperation in the future.

In the area of education, Mrs. Vana Bahshan and Dr. Ramaz Mitaishvili talked about education as a preventive tool against Avian Influenza, and expressed satisfaction at the work being carried out by the joint LAVI/AISER in the community. They also discussed LAVI’s Educational programs, as well as the important role of education statistics and the role played in this regard by the LA Vocational Institute for Statistics and AISER’s Emergency Training Initiative for Upper Abkhazia, which could play an important role in helping Georgia in their efforts to achieve the education Millennium Development Goals.

For his part, Mr. Gary Stuart the Admission coordinator, operations and marketing manager of the LA Vocational Institute, informed Mr. Ramaz Mitaishvili about new programs approved by BPPVE, such as Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, Psychiatry Technician, Vocational Nursing. Dr. Ramaz Mitaishvili was surprised with newest technologies impact on educational process in LA Vocational Institute.

In the area of education, the Mrs. Bahshan and Mr. Irakli Gagua, Director of Department for Economic Research discussed the possibility of cooperation in the context of the ASIER’s ongoing project aimed to open medical institute in Upper Abkhazia. The cooperative project will be presented to the Government of Georgia. Both organizations have a lot to contribute to such a project.

Mr. Stuart and Dr. Mitaishvili also discussed the possibility of voluntary services in Upper Abkhazia from LA Vocational graduates as well as possibility for student exchange program. They agreed that there is a need for the two organizations to work together and align their activities in this area as in others.
Finally, Mrs. Bahshan and Dr. Mitaishvili discussed how LA Vocational could contribute to the AISER’s activities to rain specialists, especially through the International Emergency Programs for the Development of Center of Disease Control in Abkhazia. They also discussed the importance of implementing the recommendations of the World Health Organization summit on the monitoring of Avian Influenza Outbreaks in the Caucasus Region.
Other areas of discussion included the ongoing cooperation on the development of CE programs, both at the regional and the global level, and of the need to further encourage countries to establish their national systems of education.
