Guidelines for Award for Excellence in Research The Bylaws of the American Society of Anesthesiologists state, “It shall be the purpose of this Society…to raise the standards of the specialty by fostering and encouraging education, research, and scientific progress in anesthesiology…”

Purpose: To recognize outstanding research that has had or is likely to have a major impact on the practice of anesthesia and/or research representing a mature and sustained contribution to the extension and advancement of the science of anesthesiology.

Eligibility: No restrictions apply to the nominee’s citizenship, residence, age, race, national origin, or institutional affiliation. The nominee must be actively engaged in research in anesthesiology or pertinent to anesthesiology at the time of nomination and election. The nominee need not be a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, an anesthesiologist, nor a physician.

Basis of Award: The award shall be made for work that contributed to changes in the practice of anesthesiology, or which altered the understanding in the science of anesthesiology. The candidate’s achievements shall consist of a body of original, mature and sustained contributions to the extension and advancement of knowledge in anesthesiology.

Nomination Procedures:

1. Nomination must be by a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, but no member may nominate more than one candidate in any one year.

2. Required submissions for nomination:

  • A nominating letter setting forth in detail the significance of the work upon which the nomination is based. The letter should document the nominee’s originality and summarize the specific observations by the nominee that have led to advances in the special field of study.
  • One seconding letter also describing the basis for nomination from an ASA member not of the same institution as the nominator.
  • A current Curriculum Vitae of the nominee.

3. Material must be submitted in electronic format, in order to facilitate distribution to committee members. Alternatively, the material can be sent to the editorial office on a computer diskette, saved either as PDF files, or presented in MS Word. 4. Deadline for receipt of nomination and supporting documents is March 30, 2008.

Selection of Awardee: An ad hoc committee of recognized scholars, who are not themselves nominees for the award, will be appointed by the President of the ASA. Members of the committee shall be chosen for their excellence in scientific investigation in anesthesiology and their understanding of past and current research developments that are significant to the practice of anesthesiology. The committee will recommend the recipient of the ASA Award for Excellence in Research to the ASA Board of Directors by June 1, 2008.

Frequency of Award:
One award may be made each year. There is, however, no obligation to make such an award when the committee believes there is no qualified recipient.

Duration of Nomination:
Each nomination will remain in active contention for three award cycles. The nominator will be asked to update the curriculum vitae and reaffirm support for the candidate each year. All components of the dossier will be available to all committee members each year.

The Award:
The award which shall be presented at the ASA Annual Meeting consists of a plaque, a check for $4,000, which includes $1,000 for travel and expenses related to attendance of the awardees at the ASA Annual Meeting.
