{mosimage}U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Michael O. Leavitt is leading the U.S. Delegation's efforts at the 60th World Health Assembly (WHA) to promote international cooperation in fighting pandemic and avian influenza and to build consensus on tackling a number of other important health issues.

Delegates from 193 countries that are members of the World Health Organization (WHO) are meeting in Geneva from May 14-23 to discuss and take action on resolutions submitted by the WHO Executive Board.  Some of the critical issues they will address include pandemic and avian influenza; the retention of the smallpox virus for scientific research; the harmful use of alcohol; and the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.
On May 14, Secretary Leavitt held a press briefing on avian influenza, HIV/AIDS, the Central American Health Diplomacy Initiative, and prescription drug benefits for senior citizens.  Also present at the event were the U.S. Department of State's Special Representative for Pandemic and Avian Influenza, Ambassador John E. Lange; the Director of the HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Julie L. Gerberding, M.D.; and the HHS Assistant Secretary for Health, Admiral John Agwunobi, M.D.
