Intravenous Push Drug Administration

Purpose
To define the professionals authorized to administer medications by direct intravenous push (IVP).
Definition: IVP is defined as the administration of any medication, diagnostic agent or intravenous fluid
infused over less than 5 minutes without the use of an infusion device.


Authorized Professionals:
Registered Nurses
Attending physicians
Resident physicians
Fellows
Dentists
Radiology Technologists – imaging contrast media only
Nuclear Technologists – radioactive imaging preparations only
Respiratory Therapy – IV steroids in the Emergency Department
Respiratory Therapy ECMO specialists
EMT-Paramedics – Plain IV fluids in the Emergency Department
Restrictions: The Pediatric Drug Dosing Handbook should be consulted for the drugs which may be
administered IV push and for monitoring parameters, administration rates and special precautions prior
to drug administration. All professionals administering IVP medication must complete appropriate
education and training regarding IVP administration prior to using this route of administration.
