American Society of Anesthesiologists Immediate Past President

CHICAGO – American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Immediate Past President Orin F. Guidry, M.D., was elected an Honorary Member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland (AAGBI) on September 14, 2007 in recognition of distinguished service to the science and art of anesthesia.

Honorary Membership to AAGBI was instituted in 1932 at the time the Association was founded. Election is at the Annual General Meeting. The award is accompanied by a citation and a certificate. In the past, Honorary Membership has been granted in several categories including:

* Very eminent overseas anesthetists.
* British and Irish anesthetists who have held high Office in the Association, usually at or about the time of retirement from active practice.
* Eminent British and Irish anesthetists of great distinction who have not necessarily held high Association Office.
* Members of other medical disciplines who have contributed to the specialty of anesthesia.
* Members of other professions who have rendered signal service to the Association.

Dr. Guidry is currently a professor and vice-chair for professional development in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Dr. Guidry has served as ASA president, treasurer and as a member of the board of directors since 1996, as well as chair of numerous committees and task forces.

He is currently president of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and has served as director and treasurer of both the ABA and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research.

A graduate of Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Medicine, Dr. Guidry trained at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Dr. Guidry and his wife, Nancy, reside in Charleston, South Carolina.

Founded in 1905, the American Society of Anesthesiologists is an educational, research and scientific association with 41,000 members organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve the care of the patient.
